Arriving via Geneva Airport

This is by far the most common way to reach Megève: Geneva Airport has year-round international connections, and Megève sits roughly 90 km to the south, via the A40 motorway. According to Megève Tourism’s own official site, the drive takes about 1h15; several independent private transfer operators quote the same distance (89–90 km) and duration. In practice, budget a range of 1h15 to 1h30 door-to-door — traffic around Geneva and winter road conditions can add time.

Geneva Airport (Genève Aéroport)

The airport itself serves a wide range of airlines and international routes, with car rental desks, taxis, and shuttle/bus stops all located right outside the arrivals area — no long internal transfer needed once you land.

Several options cover the onward journey: a pre-booked private transfer (operators such as Alps2Alps and Geneva Ways run this route, with pricing and vehicle options varying by season), a shared shuttle (cheaper, but with multiple stops), a rental car picked up airside, or a taxi from the arrivals hall. For a seasonal stay with a full load of luggage, a pre-booked private transfer is generally the simplest option.

Alternatives: Lyon and Chambéry

Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport is a realistic alternative if you don’t have a direct Geneva flight: expect roughly 2 to 2.5 hours on the road (via the A40 or A41), in exchange for a wider choice of European routes. Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport, about 1h30 away, only runs seasonal flights, mostly in winter — worth considering only if a direct flight already lines up with your dates, not as a default choice.

Driving to Megève

If you’re driving in from France or Switzerland, Megève is straightforward to reach by motorway. Per Megève Tourism’s official figures, typical drive times are: about 1h15 from Geneva via the A40, 2h30 from Lyon via the A40 or A41, 1h15 from Annecy through the Arve valley, and just 45 minutes from Chamonix. The nearest motorway exit is Sallanches (exit 20), around 12 km from the village.

One thing self-drivers genuinely need to plan for in winter: from November 1 to March 31, France’s “loi Montagne” mountain-zone law requires winter equipment in the affected communes, which includes the massif Megève sits in. According to the Haute-Savoie prefecture and Megève Tourism, your vehicle must carry either four winter tyres marked 3PMSF (the snowflake symbol — plain “M+S” marking alone no longer counts) or snow chains or textile snow socks fitted to at least two drive wheels. The rule covers light vehicles, vans, motorhomes, trucks, and coaches; dedicated road signs (B58 entering, B59 leaving the zone) mark the affected areas, and non-compliance can carry a fine. If you’re renting a car for winter, confirm it’s properly equipped before you set off rather than finding out on the road.

Arriving by train

Sallanches – Combloux – Megève station

This is the nearest station to Megève, served by TER regional trains and TGV services from Paris, Lyon, Annecy, and Geneva. It sits about 12 km from the village — so despite the name, it isn’t a station in Megève itself, and you’ll need a further connection for the last leg.

A few options cover that final stretch: the Y83 bus line, run by SAT Mont Blanc, which connects Sallanches directly to Megève and on to Praz-sur-Arly and Flumet; taxis and ride-hailing available at the station; or a pre-arranged private transfer through your accommodation. Worth knowing before you plan a tight connection: the bus operator itself states that train/bus connections aren’t guaranteed in winter, with delays of over 40 minutes possible during peak season. If you’re relying on the bus straight off a train, build in a buffer, especially in winter, or book a taxi/private transfer if your arrival time is tight.
