Booking a place in Megève: platform or direct?

The village of Megève in the heart of the mountains

8 min read

You have found the chalet or apartment you want in Megève, and now you are weighing it up: book through the platform where you spotted it, or contact whoever manages it directly? Both work. They do not cost the same, they do not run the same way, and they do not protect you against the same things. Here is what actually differs, without the caricature.

In short

  • On a platform, the price you see is not the price you pay: a guest service fee is added at checkout.
  • Booking direct, that service fee does not exist — the property is the same, and the contact is local.
  • If something breaks during your stay, the question is not “which platform?” but “who turns up, and how quickly?”
  • Platforms keep a genuine advantage: discovery, verified reviews and a standardised payment framework.
  • Before booking direct, check five simple things — listed below.

What actually differs

A booking platform is an intermediary. It introduces, collects payment, applies its own cancellation rules and acts as referee if there is a dispute. That is a real service, and it has a price.

Booking direct removes the intermediary. You deal with the person or company that manages the property, holds the keys and knows the boiler. The contract is between you and them.

The property itself is very often identical. A chalet listed on a platform can usually also be rented direct, because the owner or manager advertises it across several channels at once.

Fees: where your money goes

On most platforms there are two separate deductions: a commission paid by the host, and a guest service fee paid by you and added at checkout. That is why the total at payment is higher than the price shown in the search results.

The amounts vary by platform, length of stay and the cancellation policy chosen. Rather than quote a percentage that will change, do the concrete test: go as far as the payment screen, note the total, then ask for a direct quote for the same dates. The comparison is immediate and it does not lie.

Booking direct there is no guest service fee. Cleaning, tourist tax and any security deposit are still payable either way — those are real costs of the rental, not platform charges.

Cancellation and disputes: who decides

This is the part most often misunderstood.

On a platform, the cancellation policy is chosen by the host from a set of options, and the platform arbitrates if things go wrong. That is reassuring, and it is an honest argument in its favour.

Direct, the terms sit in the rental contract you sign. They can be more flexible — a local manager can move dates or find an arrangement an automated system will not allow — but they are only worth anything if they are written down. Never book direct without a written contract.

During the stay: who answers at 9pm

In Megève in February, a water heater that fails on a Saturday evening is not a platform problem. It is a proximity problem.

The right question to ask before booking, whichever channel you use, is simple: who attends, how quickly, and how far from the property is that person? A team based in the valley answers that differently from an owner who lives four hours away, and the difference does not show on a listing page.

What platforms do better

It would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

  • Discovery. For comparing fifty properties in one evening, a platform is unbeatable.
  • Reviews. Comments are tied to stays that genuinely took place, which is hard to replicate elsewhere.
  • Payment framework. Payment is standardised and recourse is mapped out, which matters when you do not know the host at all.

A sensible approach uses both: find the property on a platform, then check whether it is available direct from whoever manages it.

Five checks before booking direct

Booking direct means knowing who you are dealing with. These five points apply to any host — including us.

  1. An identifiable company. Registered name, SIRET number, address and legal notice available on the website.
  2. A written rental contract, stating the dates, the total price, what is included, the deposit and the cancellation terms.
  3. Traceable payment. Bank transfer or secure online payment — never cash, never a money order.
  4. Someone reachable by phone before you book. If nobody answers before you have paid, it will not improve afterwards.
  5. A precise, verifiable address, given before the balance is paid.

Where we stand

We manage chalets and apartments in Megève, Combloux, Demi-Quartier, Praz-sur-Arly and Cordon, and our properties appear both on the platforms and on our own site. We have nothing against platforms — they bring us guests we would never have met.

What we can say plainly: direct, you pay for the property without a guest service fee, you speak to the team that holds the keys, and the person who answers in February is a few minutes from the chalet.

Frequently asked questions

What are the drawbacks of booking through a platform?

Mainly three. A guest service fee added to the displayed price at checkout. Communication filtered through the platform, which slows down precise questions about the property. And a cancellation policy picked from a list of options, so less flexible than an arrangement negotiated with a local manager. In exchange, the platform provides a payment framework and arbitration if there is a dispute.

Is it cheaper to book direct?

Usually yes, because the guest service fee disappears. Cleaning, tourist tax and the deposit are payable either way. The only reliable method is to compare the total actually paid: go to the payment screen on the platform, then ask for a direct quote for the same dates.

Is booking a chalet direct risky?

Not if you check who you are dealing with. Insist on an identifiable company with a SIRET number and a legal notice, a written rental contract stating the total price and cancellation terms, traceable payment, someone reachable by phone before you book, and a precise address. A serious host provides all of it without being asked.

Is the property the same on the platform and direct?

In the great majority of cases, yes. The same chalet is advertised across several channels by its owner or manager. What changes is the booking route, the fees applied and the person you deal with — not the property.
